How Do You Like Your
Coffee?
Charles Maurice de Talleyrand (1758-1838)
described the perfect cup of coffee as:
"Black
as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as
love."
But whether you like yours with sugar and
milk, or cream, coffee has become something of a fuel of the
21st century. There's nothing like a cup to get you out of bed
just as the sun is rising.
Funnily enough, early monarchs were quite
against the rise of coffee consumption amongst their subjects.
King Charles of England tried to pass an order suppressing
coffee houses, though due to popular protest, this was
repealed.
And Frederick the Great of Prussia said, in
1777:
"It is disgusting to notice the increase in
the quantity of coffee used by my subjects, and the amount of
money that goes out of the country as a consequence. Everybody
is using coffee; this must be prevented. His Majesty was
brought up on beer, and so were both his ancestors and
officers. Many battles have been fought and won by soldiers
nourished on beer, and the King does not believe that
coffee-drinking soldiers can be relied upon to endure hardships
in case of another war."
I somehow think that bosses today,
especially in the military, would prefer coffee to beer for
their employees anytime!
Whether you prefer your own brewed coffee,
made with the most amazing selection of coffee making machines
available, or your favourite coffee house, there is no shortage
of types or availablity of coffee.
And why should there be! As the writer de
Balzac said:
"As
soon as coffee is in your stomach, there is a general
commotion. Ideas begin to move...similes arise, the paper is
covered. Coffee is your ally and writing ceases to be a
struggle."
